Inspiring Stories

Learn character from trees, Values from roots, and Change from leaves

What do you feel when you enter a forest? For some, it’s just green; for others, it's leaves and trees. But for many, it's a breathing soul, a window to another dimension. A forest offers something unique for each of us: trails of adventure, serene camping spots, and a feast for the eyes of a writer seeking sublime inspiration. A forest greets you with the smell of damp moss, rain, and wet tree trunks, making many feel like they are breathing for the first time.

The Healing Power of Forests

Research has shown that spending just five hours per month in a forest can significantly improve one’s mental health. Unfortunately, the declining forest cover around the world sends an alarming message, urging us to reconsider our approach to development. Forests play a crucial role in absorbing carbon from the atmosphere and storing it in their trunks, roots, and soil. As we clear these forests, we release dangerous amounts of carbon into the atmosphere. Deforestation, driven by logging, urban expansion, and commercial agriculture, is a permanent destruction that drastically impacts the carbon cycle and the environment.

Protecting and Rewilding Our Planet

How can we save our forests and rewild our planet? One way is to use the forest resources responsibly. With a growing global population, the demand for wood increases. Wood is an excellent renewable resource, but natural forests cannot meet our needs. Therefore, we must farm trees like other crops. This can help local economies and preserve natural forests by planting trees on cleared and degraded lands.

Many countries plant millions of trees each year, and technology aids in dispersing seeds to far-off places. Various indigenous groups are dedicated to planting and protecting trees and securing their upkeep through sponsorship.

Tree Ordination: A Sacred Practice

If you have ever traveled through the forests of Sri Lanka and Thailand, you may have seen trees adorned with orange cloth. This practice, initiated by Buddhist sanghas and local communities, marks trees as sacred, encouraging villagers to respect and protect the forest. These forests also serve as a sanctuary for monks practicing spiritual rituals and as a home for many tribal and agricultural communities.

Ancestral Knowledge and Modern Wisdom

Forests are treasure troves of mental and physical healing, with each plant serving a purpose. Primitive technologies found in forests can often rival modern engineering and architecture.

The survival skills required for forest life put everyday work pressures into perspective. Even seeing trees from a window or walking past them on our way to work can restore our minds and bodies. That is the magic of trees, and when you are in a forest, you can truly feel it.
